Hendrix Experienced!

Hi there :)
I hope you're all having a great Friday so far...another weekend is upon us! What are your plans??

As I mentioned in my last post, on Wednesday I attended the Experience Hendrix concert in Hollywood, FL with my boyfriend Ivan. Experience Hendrix is a tour of various artists such as Billy Cox, Dweezil Zappa, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robby Krieger, David Hidalgo & Cesar Rosas from Los Lobos, among many others, they all come together and play some of the best Jimi Hendrix songs with incredible accuracy, both in tribute to the man himself and as a gift to the people who love his music. Read more about the history of the tour here, or check the tour dates to see if it's coming to a city near you.

Our experience on the way to/at/leaving this concert was awesome, no hassles - at all - well, apart from having to take the drive up to Hollywood from Miami. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to hear some great artists play Hendrix music live! So once we got up there, we exited on Griffin Road from the Turnpike, and after a few minutes and turns we were driving straight into the Hard Rock parking garage, parking the car, and walking to the elevators. From highway to elevator in no more than 15 or 20 minutes! In other words, no insane traffic on the highway, getting off the highway or to the location itself. Perhaps that is because we were actually early, for once! Oh yes we were... :)

So, with time, we walked around and got a quick bite to eat (and some drinks) before walking casually into the concert... There were bands everywhere throughout the Hard Rock mall and casino/hotel complex, singing all sorts of classic rock, one cowboy was croonin' some Johnny Cash in the casino too. We could immediately spot the people who were going to the Experience Hendrix concert that night because they had on all types of Hendrix t-shirts (all of which I want, hehe) and they were in groups chatting/shouting happily.

So let's cut to the concert.... At certain moments, Ivan and I both agreed that if we closed our eyes we could imagine that it was Jimi Hendrix himself playing that guitar. We felt the music in our souls! I won't lie, I got emotional at certain times throughout the show, it's strange, but I feel that strongly about his music that it makes me sad to think he did not live to play into old age and be on tour. Anyway, we had pretty great seats and the concert venue at Hard Rock feels pretty intimate and small compared with those where other concerts are held, so we felt close to the stage. I called my mother to let her know we were there and to thank her again and let her know that the seats turned out to be great - a.k.a. non-nosebleed, which would have been all the same to me anyway because music is heard, not seen. While we were on the phone, she asked what the crowd was like and I told her that from what it looked like in our section, surrounding sections, and down below on the floor in front of the stage, we were some of the youngest people! It made for a very harmonious and, yes I'm gonna say it, groovy atmosphere and experience. Apart from that, I've been told by many that I must be an old soul, for many reasons beyond my musical tastes. It just felt nice to be surrounded by people that love Jimi Hendrix music as much as I do. At one point I even wondered how many of the people in the crowd had seen Jimi live in the 60's, perhaps even at Woodstock (and a sting of envy may or may not have crept over me, hahahahaha).

The musicians that play Jimi Hendrix's songs are incredible! It was great to hear and see bassist Billy Cox in person, he is the last surviving member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys. Kenny Wayne Shepherd was spectacular and so were the guys from Los Lobos! I just can't say enough about this concert, you should definitely try and see it if you can (FYI - our tickets were $49 each). So scroll on for some images from the concert. Yesterday on Facebook I said that I had some videos to share with you, which I do, but after a wise suggestion from my dear boyfriend, I researched the legality of posting personally recorded concert footage and it's a no-no. It's pretty annoying, because I can't share these incredible performances with you without violating copyright laws. However, I have found some posted videos of the very same performances, you can find the links below amongst my photos of the concert.

Have a great weekend!

Check out a video of them playing Spanish Castle Magic or All Along the Watchtower with Brad Whitford, Calvin Cook, Chris Layton and Scott Nelson.

I love this photo!

Kenny Wayne Shepherd's live performance of Voodoo Chile was the best performance of the night! See that same performance in another city on the tour right here. Oooooh, I wish I could show you my eleven minute video. Grrrr.

At the end of the show, all of the artists and Janie Hendrix (Jimi's adopted younger sister who is President and CEO of the Experience Hendrix company) came out on stage.

Experience Hendrix was an awesome concert, that was major talent!

As we were walking out, Billy Cox literally brushed right by me (followed by a few lazy security guys in yellow shirts) on his way souvenir tables. I managed to get some pictures of him as he signed autographs. Again, he is the only surviving member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys! I didn't need to get his autograph, besides my stupid self totally forgot to bring one of my recently purchase Hendrix records. It's not a big deal to me, I heard him play and I got a photo (and a breeze as he passed) of him. LOL ;)

It was such a wonderful tribute... We love ya Jimi!!!
