New Succulent Love: Sedum sieboldii

During my succulent image browsing today I've decided that maybe it's time for me to start considering shopping for succulents online, after all that affords me the option of choosing from many more varieties! Let's just say my love for cacti and succulents has grown beyond Home Depot's nursery selection, it's time to start seeking out the less common species, YEAH! Anyway, as I was browsing succulents on a Florida nursery's site I came across Sedum Sieboldii, pronounced "SEE-dum see-BOLD-ee-eye" nicknamed "October Daphne." Sedum is a large genus of flowering plants in the Crassulaceae family containing 400 species of leaf succulents.

Now, there are a lot of interesting and beautiful plants out there, but this one is just marvelous! At first its leaves reminded me of my Kalanchoe at home, the one I featured in Saturday's Garden Update: (it's the top left purply flappy one)

.... Alas, I was happy to learn it is very different than a Kalanchoe! Born in threes, the stems grow out from the center and spread out into a circular mound, perfect for a centerpiece planter or hanging basket! Better yet, it fills with amazing pink blooms in late summer to early fall and t
he edges of its leaves turn reddish pink as winter temperatures approach. Also, according to North Creek Nurseries, Sedum sieboldii can grow 6-12" in height and spread up to 12", it is drought tolerant, deer resistant and its name comes from the Latin sedo which means 'to sit' and probably refers to the way this plant and other Sedums sit on walls and rock ledges.

There are also many other variations of Sedum, so if you love this one you're sure to love all the rest like me! I LOVE it! I've already found it online for $4.99 in a 4" grower's pot at Santa Rosa Gardens, now all I have to do is buy one... or five! Watch out Santa Rosa Gardens! :)

I hope you love this plant as much as I do!
