Miami Cactus and Succulents Business: Inspire Bohemia Reborn

Hello world!

My presence here has been pretty scarce, as I've been doing a lot of that little thing called "soul searching" and my life has evolved in ways I never imagined in just a few short years.  But one of the most beautiful things that has happened since I first started Inspire Bohemia many moons ago, is the discovery of my passion for plants and the garden, particularly succulents and cacti.

I created Inspire Bohemia as a platform to inspire others, and in the process I ended up inspiring myself through the discovery of my love for the garden.  The problem with inspiration is that it can come and go, and it can most definitely transform.  So, with my inspiration for the garden came a desire to fulfill a more hands-on hobby, which gradually evolved into the foundation for a small business.  Unfortunately, my drive to continue posting here diminished as I further involved myself in these new found goals.  Lately, however, I've felt a pull to get back to doing what helped me grow to this point in the first place, which is sharing my passions with the world wide web.

I figure it's a shame to take all the beautiful photos that I do and just hoard them on a hard drive, am I right?  That's actually another thing that has evolved, my photographs.  When Inspire Bohemia first began, I used my old iphone to take pictures, but as time went on I knew I had to get a better camera that would bring more life to my subjects.  These days, I use a DSLR camera and it makes all the difference!

So back to gardening...  I come from a family of green thumbs, my great grandmother was an exceptional gardener with a talent for growing just about anything and a desire to share her knowledge with anyone who took an interest.  Similarly, my grandmother is effortless in the garden and anything she touches flourishes...  And then there's my mother, whose ability to revive nearly dead plants and evoke flowers from orchids is fascinating.  Even my uncle has a green thumb and passion for Staghorn ferns, Orchids, and fruit trees, check out this great post I did on his garden in Key Largo.  Little did I know that I too had the same green thumb, fervid passion, and endless fascination for the garden until I fell in love with succulents and cacti back in 2008.  The rest, as they say, is history!

I began obsessively accumulating as many succulent and cactus plants as I could find at Home Depot, and unique planters to fill at TJMaxx, Homegoods, Marshalls, Ross, Goodwill, the dollar store, and antique stores.  Its been nearly ten years (whaaaat!?) and these days I buy my plants at a special cactus and succulent nursery out in Homestead (more extensive selection and much healthier plants), and I've created hundreds of planters out of everything imaginable - all it takes is a special drill bit and lots of imagination!  But more importantly, I've come to understand succulents and cacti in a way I failed to do in the beginning.  That is to say - I had many tragedies, I killed many plants, and I literally grieved for each and every one lost because I fell so in love with their unique compositions and flowers.

I still lose a plant from time to time, but thankfully its a rarity these days.  I've also made it a point to learn and memorize my plants' names, something I take great pride in...  By the way, this is also a trait that causes a lot of amusement in others when I proudly proclaim the full blown scientific name and nickname of a plant, especially my fiance.  Yup, I'm engaged!  But that's a story for another day...

Soooo, this long winded post is to say - I'm back on the block and ready to rock!  I've started a side business doing Home and Garden Design, Styling and Staging; Custom Planters; Landscape Planning - particularly Xeriscape Landscaping which is drought tolerant landscaping with Succulents and Cacti (of course!); and custom art.  Yep, I've been getting back to my artistic roots, since my first passion in life was and always will be art.  Specifically, I've been painting!  My biggest issue making art has always been subject matter - what to draw, what to paint, etc etc.  In fact, as far back as I can remember, I was a child at the kitchen table asking my mom what I should draw as she cooked dinner.  But alas, I've finally discovered my muse: the GARDEN!  Succulents and Cacti never cease to amaze me, they drive my artistic passion and have served as the ultimate subject matter for my dive back into art.  Also, paint was always a medium I felt uncomfortable with (read: bad at) but always wanted to excel at, especially watercolor painting - because I love the dreamy magic that it creates with its watered down shades and shadows.  To date, I have created over fifty watercolor paintings of succulents and cacti and even sold a bunch, along with my succulent and cactus planters, at one of Miami's most popular flea markets - The Miami Flea.

Go figure, I initially signed up for The Miami Flea to sell my planters, but at the last minute decide to take a leap of faith and get prints of my paintings made in order to sell....  Turns out, I sold more prints of my artwork than planters!  Funny, I was hesitant and scared to put myself out there, but once I did I was pleasantly surprised.  Just goes to show you, always be proud and confident of your work, never second guess yourself.  Which is why, I've decided to come back to blogging here at Inspire Bohemia and share my new found passions and business objectives with you.  I used to lament Inspire Bohemia's hey day and think those days were over, but now I see that I have changed and so has this website.  I want to embrace that change and I hope you will share this exciting new journey with me!

I'll be back tomorrow with a post on my cactus and succulent watercolor paintings and another post on my booth and experiences selling at the Miami Flea in Wynwood.  In the meantime,
I have featured some photographs of my most recent cactus and succulent planter creations for your viewing pleasure, enjoy!
